New Rail Tunnel to Canada

Imagine a short trip to Toronto on the high speed train from Downtown Detroit! Chinatown here we come! Or perhaps an international small business expansion made possible by an easily accessible international rail connection? No more complex trip to the ViaRail station in Windsor - get on in Detroit, get off in Toronto or Montreal. How about travel packages to Caribana or other festivals? This is actually a possibility for Detroit!

Did you know that there soon may be a new rail tunnel to Canada built? There is already one for cargo trains but it is too short for the newer trains so they are planning on building a new one. It will be built by the Canadian Pacific Railway and Borealis Infrastructure Trust, a division of the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System, with the Windsor Port Authority to create the Continental Rail Gateway.

There is also the possibility of a passenger train that links Chicago to Montreal in the old rail tunnel! http://www.windsorstar.com/news/Rail+tunnel+awaiting+government+funds/5641509/story.html  It even has the possibility of being connected to a high speed link

They are still waiting on the US and Canadian governments to put funds toward the project. There will be union jobs, probably Teamsters. Jobs will also be available through the construction companies that work on the project. "Should the rail tunnel project win the green light, backers of the project say it will create between 1,700 and 2,200 construction jobs."

About half of those will be for the US.

All aboard a world of possibilities for Detroiters!!
